Sunset Park Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
The Brooklyn Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is the largest and most sophisticated recycling plant in North America. Originally built and operated by SMR, the recycling facility opened in December 2013 and processes most of New York City’s curbside material.
Situated on an 11-acre pier to provide waterfront access, materials from Queens and the Bronx arrive via barge, significantly reducing truck traffic.
Brooklyn is home to the Recycling Education Center (REC), an interactive recycling space where visitors learn how the recycling process works and can view our operations from observation platforms.

The 2026 NYSACC Conference on the Environment brings the statewide environmental conversation to New York City.
Hosted in collaboration with the Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board, the conference will connect municipal leaders, public agencies, environmental professionals, innovators, solution providers, conservation leaders and community stakeholders around one of the most urgent
questions facing New York:
“How do we turn Zero Waste ambition into real-world infrastructure, technology and
implementation?”

Environmental Excellence Awards Program
NYSACC's awards program, given each year at our annual conference, recognizes our members in three different ways: Margery Sachs Award for Environmental Leadership to an individual demonstrating "lifelong environmental concern and service", Joy Squires Student Environmental Achievement Award to a currently enrolled student who has shown their ability to lead through research, projects, education, or other endeavors that make a difference in our environment, and The Environmental Excellence Awards Program recognizes exceptional projects carried out by New York State municipal, county, and regional governments and non-profit organizations in the areas of Environmental Planning and Design; Natural Resource Protection; Community Action and Engagement; Education; Research; or another related subject area.
